You’ve looked up the questions to ask your parents. You haven’t asked them yet.
The lists are easy to find. Finding an evening when you’re both free, and remembering to press record, is the hard part.
So the interviewer does the asking. It listens, then follows up on what they actually said: a name, a street, the smell of the kitchen. When you set it up, you can list topics to cover and topics to leave alone.
What it asks about, over the sessions
- The home they grew up in
- Their parents and grandparents
- School and friends
- Early jobs
- Love and marriage
- Raising children
- Hard times, and how they got through
- Proud moments
- Traditions and recipes
- Places they’ve lived
- What they want the grandkids to know
